What We do

Adapting to our unprecedented cultural situation involves scientific knowledge and evidence-based reasoning, but that’s not enough. To adapt wisely, we need to address the deepest reaches of personal motivation and human meaning, as well. Just Horizons initiatives integrate knowledge AND wisdom for a more just and hopeful future.

How We do it

Just Horizons is helping people become more effective forces for adaptive change right where they live and work by empowering them with the accurate information, strategic focus, and inner wisdom needed to navigate a profoundly uncertain future.

How do we do it?

  • One classroom at a time –adaptive AI ethics for the future

  • One person at a time – adaptive personal virtues for the future

  • One book at a time – adaptive expansive spirituality for the future

  • One problem at a time – adaptive prosocial computing for the future

  • Leading-edge research tells us where we are and what’s coming

  • Expert consultations identify the adaptive responses we most need

Preparing for a Future
we can Scarcely Imagine

Humanity is facing an unprecedented polycrisis: social, cultural, political, economic, ecological, technological, and ethical. How can we adapt to the daunting challenges of our time? By engaging mind and heart in research-informed change-making.

  • Clever engineering is necessary but not enough to navigate the challenges we’re facing. We critically need adaptive wisdom — values, ethics, spirituality, the wellsprings of human meaning, updated for our time.
  • We’re not going to guess or sleepwalk our way through what’s coming, either. To be adaptive in our perilous situation, human meaning (values, ethics, spirituality) must be firmly connected to open, replicable research.

Just Horizons Alliance unites sound knowledge and adaptive wisdom in everything we do: human-in-the-loop computing to solve social problems, ethical analyses of new and emerging technology, publishing books on expansive spirituality for our time. Sometimes we amplify the work of other changemakers. Sometimes we take action ourselves.  Everything we do faces forward, preparing for a future we can scarcely imagine.

“Love is such a powerful force. It’s there for everyone to embrace – a kind of unconditional love for all humankind. That is the kind of love that impels people to go into the community and try to change conditions for others, to take risks for what they believe in.” — Coretta King

Where is the wisdom we have lost in knowledge?
Where is the knowledge we have lost in information?
